Is Stephen Curry ever going to leave the Warriors? Probably not. But what if he did? Since winning the title in 2022, the Warriors have been largely irrelevant despite the fact that Curry is still playing at an All-NBA level. His running mates have all aged out or gotten injured, and the franchise is stuck at the moment.
LeBron James seemed like a last-ditch effort, but with that falling through, Golden State is set to run it back with the same roster that just finished 37-45, good for 10th place in the Western Conference, and their second-best player, Jimmy Butler, is still recovering from a torn ACL. The team is in big trouble with no real path to building a contender for the tail end of Steph’s career.
Marcus Thompson of The Athletic went on KNBR in San Francisco and suggested that for the first time in his career, Curry and the Warriors’ front office may not be on the same page. Thompson expanded in an article, claiming that Curry still wants to win and, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season, he could be using free agency as leverage.
He’s sick of the star-chasing that has come up empty again and again. With Butler and Moses Moody on the shelf with major injuries, Curry is going to be relied upon to carry an offense for a team that likely has zero shot at doing much better than a play-in appearance. It would be a sad ending for Curry’s illustrious career, and frankly, he deserves better.
Boston is the perfect place for Curry to end his career
And that’s where the Celtics come in. If the Warriors aren’t willing to go all-in for one last run with their franchise icon, then they owe it to him to trade him somewhere where he can win. And the Celtics make perfect sense. They now have a soon-to-be expiring Paul George contract that will be for $56.6 million next year.Â
Boston can stack that deal with some picks and players and give Steph a real chance to chase a couple more rings in Boston. He’d be a perfect fit at point guard in Joe Mazzulla’s offense, feasting off of all the great screeners on the team. He’d be great running the offense but also do wonders off the ball while Jayson Tatum, Payton Pritchard, and others create. And seeing him step into a catch-and-shoot three off a kickout from an offensive rebound would be sublime.
When the Celtics made the Jaylen Brown trade, this is the kind of move they could be setting themselves up for down the road. Whether things will actually get bad enough that Curry would want to leave remains to be seen, but if he wants to win, it’s a sacrifice he’s going to have to make. And if and when that day comes, Brad Stevens and the Celtics will be in perfect position to pounce.
