Spurs taking page out of Celtics' unorthodox playbook for playoff success

It's not the most conventional method, but hey, it's getting them some wins!

The San Antonio Spurs notched a win in the 2026 NBA Finals, ensuring that, at the very least, they won't get swept. It has been a bit of an odd series thus far, as no home team has won a game yet. The Spurs can take solace knowing the way they have won in the finals (and really in these playoffs) is by going by the Boston Celtics' calling card: winning on the road.

This year's postseason notwithstanding, Boston has been one of the most consistently successful teams for the past decade or so, give or take. However, they have done so by following a rather unique route to stay good: winning on the road.

The Celtics have managed to overcome or at least stay in a few series over the years because they stay resilient when they are playing away from Boston - Note that by proxy, it also shows how oddly poorly they play at home - and doing so has always given them hope no matter how bleak things have gotten.

Remember when the Bucks had a 3-2 going back to Milwaukee in 2022? The road warriors prevailed.
Remember when the Sixers had the Celtics right where they wanted them in 2023? The road warriors overcame it all!
Remember when the Heat had all the momentum going up 3-0 in 2023? The road warriors kept Boston in it.

For some reason, Boston has shown that they are actually better on the road than they are at home. In a way, they seem to be trendsetters because San Antonio has followed in their footsteps and not just in the finals.

They beat the Thunder, the reigning NBA Champions mind you, in Oklahoma City twice. Including the decisive Game 7. In other words, the Spurs have done their best Celtics impression, and that has only continued in these NBA Finals. For now, at least.

Win or lose, the Celtics have stayed consistent

As everyone knows, the Celtics got embarrassed in this year's postseason, but even then, they still maintained their reputation to be better on the road in the playoffs than at home, as two of their wins against the Philadelphia 76ers were in Philly while three of their losses were in Boston.

Why they've become so bad at home in the Jays era, who knows? It's one of life's biggest mysteries that, as long as they continue their success from here, no one should have a problem with it.

Yes, the Celtics have fallen off the horse, but they have proven that they can get back on, and a lot of it is because they are the oddly most resilient playoff road team the NBA has ever seen!
