Rival NBA teams just handed the Celtics a massive coaching victory

It doesn't appear like Sam Cassell will be a part of this year's NBA coaching cycle. That's a significant win for the Celtics. However, his opportunity is long overdue.

While respecting the fluidity of the situation, it does not appear like Sam Cassell will be among the hires from this year's NBA coaching cycle. The Orlando Magic went with Sean Sweeney. That's a move that begs the question of whether a pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo is next. And if that's the right direction for them to go in.

The Washington Wizards tanked their way to the top pick. Sometimes, A coaching change is a part of the subsequent makeover when that happens. However, they have committed to Brian Keefe. The Sacramento Kings have done the same with Doug Christie. And the New Orleans Pelicans opted for Jamahl Mosley.

Cassell is not one of the reported finalists for the Portland Trail Blazers' opening for a new bench boss. Fellow Boston Celtics assistant coach Tyler Lashbrook is, however. So is Jeff Van Gundy, who was a senior consultant for the Celtics during the 2023-24 campaign.

And while the Chicago Bulls' new vice president of basketball operations, Bryson Graham, has cast a wide net in the search for Billy Donovan's successor, Cassell's name isn't linked to that vacancy.

The same goes for the Dallas Mavericks' new head of basketball operations, Masai Ujiri's efforts to find someone to take the helm after moving on from Jason Kidd.

Sam Cassell's head-coaching opportunity is long overdue

There is no denying that he has put in the work to have landed a head-coaching job at some point. The former floor general had a 15-year playing career. He earned an All-Star selection while acting as an extension of his head coach on the court. Since retiring, he has spent 17 years as an NBA assistant. It's hard to believe that no team has gone in his direction.

That's especially true when you consider his stellar track record of helping develop young stars. It's a list that features Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Maxey, and John Wall.

Charles Lee worked alongside Cassell as a part of Joe Mazzulla's staff in 2023-24. In a trip to Boston late in the 2025-26 campaign, the Charlotte Hornets' bench boss shared what that experience was like.

"Sam, he brought joy; he brought a knowledge for what it takes to win," said Lee. "I think that he has a great way of being able to connect with the players and explain to them what's necessary of them to win at the highest levels. And they respect him. I respected him. It was great to be able to watch how he works, and how he interacts, and how he communicates."

Cassell loves his current role with the Celtics. That doesn't mean he's giving up on his pursuit of a head-coaching opportunity.

"Hopefully, it happens for me. I would like to have an opportunity to coach one of these teams. But the enjoyment I get from being a coach in basketball is seeing young men, when they are first getting in the league, and their progress in life," Cassell told Hardwood Houdini in February. "Becoming good basketball players, becoming family men, and becoming fathers. That's the part I enjoy."

Perhaps there's an opportunity awaiting him in the NCAA that would interest him. Maybe another NBA job comes open. Or perhaps one of the teams still searching for their next head coach decides that Cassell is the right person for the post. What's evident is that his opportunity to prove what he can do at the helm is long overdue. And that, for as long as he's doing what he loves in Boston, that's a significant win for the Celtics.
