G League star discarded by Sixers could be Boston Celtics diamond in the rough
The Boston Celtics are having a fantastic season, but at this point, the team is only holding it together because of their strong starting five. Many are expecting the team to dominate during the regular season and then go on to have big battles in the playoffs with the Sixers and Bucks -- but despite having a strong starting five the Celtics will need more firepower on the bench to stay ahead of their competition.
A perfect fit for the C’s second unit is former Sixer and G league star Mac McClung. This season especially, he has put up eye-popping performances, averaging nearly 30 points per game. He has shown out for the Osceola Magic and can give the Boston Celtics that type of firepower while running the second unit.
As The Magic Insider's Isaiah Deanda Delgado put it, McClung has been "liquid gold" and he has been invaluable to the Osceola Magic via several massive performances.
"Much like Velveeta Mac and Cheese, Mac was liquid gold this game, finishing as the scoring leader for his second straight contest," Delgado prefaced before saying, "McClung followed up his 38-point outing on Thursday with a 44-point masterclass in shooting."
Mac McClung could thrive with Boston Celtics in ways he never did with Sixers
McClung's ability to shoot and score the ball can help him shine with the Cs in a way he never could in Philadelphia, since the Sixers did not provide him with the chance he deserved to shine on offense. While backing up Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, he can play solid minutes and even help Payton Pritchard shine more by allowing him to become more of a knockdown shooter while McClung handles the ball for the bench unit.
This fit would be excellent since it would allow the C's to have someone who can give them instant offense off the bench and keep opposing teams on their toes all game. With the Celtics looking to dominate the entire NBA this season making the move to pick up McClung can just help them widen the gap between them and everyone else.
