5 Trade scenarios the Celtics must prepare for this offseason

4. Horford's retirement creates need
Al Horford has played a key role for the Celtics since joining the franchise for the first time in 2016. Boston realized how important he was after the 6’9 big man left in free agency in 2019, so they reacquired him in the summer of 2021. It is not easy finding someone who can space the floor, rebound, make plays, protect the rim, and guard multiple positions.
Horford’s minutes are down. He is playing under 27 minutes per game for the first time in his NBA career. The 37-year-old primarily comes off the bench and is their sixth man. Boston must limit his workload if they want to keep him healthy and productive for the playoffs.
If the Celtics win a championship, does Horford return? The five-time All-Star has played 17 years in the NBA. He has accomplished everything except winning a championship. Horford is under contract for $9.5 million in the 2024-25 season, but he may decide to walk away.
The Boston Celtics must prepare a contingency plan. Their avenues to improve their roster are limited. Expect the franchise to try to convince Al Horford to return, but it is his decision and could depend on how they finish the year.
