4. Al Horford

Horford is under contract for $9.5 million next season. The Celtics need him, despite his move to the bench and playing the fewest minutes per game of his NBA career. He remains a key floor spacer, defender, and versatile weapon. The 38-year-old finally won his first championship and has zero desire to leave Boston.

Spending concerns are the only reason this happens. The Celtics have $162.9 million committed in salaries for the 2025-26 season to just six players. They must extend Derrick White and fill their roster with just $37.7 million to spend below the second tax apron. If White stays, Boston will face the second apron penalties for the foreseeable future.

At some point, Horford will retire and this could be their final chance to get significant value in return. He is already 38 and just finished his 17th NBA season. Fans saw his production dip as he played heavy minutes in the playoffs. Boston needs Kristaps Porzingis insurance, but Horford is nearing the end of his legendary career.

Do not expect this trade to happen, but it cannot be ruled out entirely. The Boston Celtics will face significant tax implications if they pay Al Horford in the summer of 2025. Their cheapest path is trading him now, but his contributions are crucial to their success.
