The Celtics need to decide the futures of these players as soon as possible.

KP unquestionably changed the Celtics’ attack. Having a 7’2 big man capable of shooting from 30 feet, protecting the rim, and posting up is difference-making. Boston was better on both ends of the floor with the Unicorn in the lineup, but are they comfortable with his injury history moving forward?

Porzingis has not played more than 57 regular season games since 2017. He missed 12 of their 19 playoff contests this season. KP was massive in the first round and the NBA Finals when he was on the floor, but he appeared in just 23.6 minutes per game. There is always injury risk, but Porzingis has a history of missing time.

Are the Celtics comfortable paying him $30 million per year and not knowing if he will be available in the playoffs? It certainly casts some doubt. Odds are KP returns for the 2024-25 season, but Boston may explore the trade market. The Unicorn needs surgery and will be off the court for multiple months. If he suffers another injury early next season, things may change by the deadline.

The Boston Celtics are still celebrating their 18th championship, but Brad Stevens must be looking forward and sorting out their roster. They have a chance to repeat in 2025 and become the NBA’s next dynasty. It will take plenty of skill and some luck, but fans should be excited for the future no matter what happens this offseason.
