6. Dennis Smith Jr.

DSJ is another top prospect who nearly fell out of the league. The Mavericks drafted him ninth overall in 2017, but it became clear in his second season that he would not be the lead ball-handler and playmaker with Luka Doncic in Dallas. After being traded to the Knicks, Smith Jr. bounced around the league and had to reinvent himself as a backup point guard.

The 26-year-old did just that in Charlotte last season and has taken it to another level with the Nets. He has become a leader and energy provider (subscription required) in Brooklyn. Smith Jr. can make plays and competes hard on defense. The athletic ability that made him a top-ten pick has declined, but the 6’2 guard gives his all.

He is a below-average 3-point shooter but would be a fantastic depth piece for the Celtics. Smith Jr. wants to win and could be looking to sign with a contender in free agency. Boston can only offer a minimum deal, but they would maximize his odds at a ring. Does Smith Jr. want to be in Beantown?

The Boston Celtics will look to add multiple depth pieces in free agency, and fans can be certain they will hunt for a wing capable of backing up Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Getting another playmaker is important, but the franchise has long wanted some depth at the three and four.
