They may be coming off an NBA Championship run, but the Boston Celtics still managed to bring in two solid rookies from the 2024 NBA Draft class. They selected Baylor Scheierman out of Creighton with the No. 30 pick and Gonzaga’s Anton Watson with the No. 54 pick.

Scheierman struggled at times during Summer League, but outside of his inconsistent shooting, he looked comfortable playing against the competition. As for Watson, he was great on both ends of the floor.

On the other hand, Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James played poorly all throughout Summer League. Outside of one solid game at the end, James was a mess.

Yet somehow, he was rated a 68 in NBA 2K25. Meanwhile, Scheierman is a 68, and Watson is a 69.

To put it bluntly, all of the rookie ratings from this year’s class are messed up. The highest-rated rookies are Zaccharie Risacher and and Alex Sarr at a 75, yet Reed Sheppard, who outperformed both of them in Summer League is a 73.

Nikola Topic (72)1, who was injured for Summer League, is rated higher than Bub Carrington (70), who was awesome in Summer League. DaRon Holmes II (71), who suffered a season-ending injury in Summer League, is rated higher than Kel’el Ware (70), who was drafted higher and made an All-Summer League Team.

The ratings were terrible. However, Boston’s rookies, and some of the other later selections, were particularly thrown to the side compared to James.

While his heart issues are a fair and notable reason for his collegiate struggles, the point remains: James wasn’t an amazing college basketball player. Scheierman and Watson were. They both had amazing final seasons that were backed up by four previous years of sustained success.

That alone should have gotten them rated higher than James. Scheierman was drafted 24 spots higher. And while Watson was the pick right before him, the Gonzaga alum significantly outperformed James in Summer League.

Even guys like Oso Ighodaro, Cam Spencer, and Adem Bona, all of whom played far better than James in Summer League, received the same rating as the Lakers guard.

James has a good chance to be a very effective NBA player. He’s a solid defender and has enough tools to make it work on the offensive end, too. But giving him a rating in the same realm as guys like Scheierman, Watson, Ighodaro, Spencer, and Bona is disrespectful.
