Paul George joining the Golden State Warriors
Paul George’s tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers has been mired in abject failure, in large part due to key injuries. While Paul George signed with the Clippers, in large part to return home to Los Angeles, there’s a growing sense that his time with the organization has reached its natural conclusion. Paul George is on the wrong side of 30. In basketball years, 34 years old means that George is entering his mid-life crisis. Time is running out for George, who, despite his recent comments, wants to be a key contributor on a championship team.
George’s comments about “playing the right style of basketball” reminds me of the phraseology Kevin Durant used when he joined the Warriors eight years ago. The Golden State Warriors seem to be in the midst of a messy divorce with Klay Thompson, not to mention that the future of Kevon Looney and Chris Paul seems uncertain — given the adverse ramifications their contracts would financially have on the Warriors. Losing Thompson, Looney, and Paul would free up a great deal of cap-space. Is it possible Paul George could move a little further north, but remain in California a little while longer?
Paul George to the Warriors would be a match made in heaven. The Warriors still have a small window to pursue their fifth championship with Stephen Curry. Given Jonathan Kuminga’s development and Draymond Green’s composure, Paul George could help propel the Warriors familiar territory in 2024-25.
