All things equal, it doesn’t seem like anyone believes the Heat can put together a trade package for Giannis Antetokounmpo that’s better than Jaylen Brown. If that’s a real offer that’s on the table, the Celtics should have Miami beat; it’s as simple as that. The Heat obviously know this, and it has left Pat Riley and company scrambling, trying to find ways to up their offer as the minutes tick away before the NBA Draft.
One of the only ways they can really improve their package is by finding other teams to take on their players, and that may actually be happening, as there have been rumblings that the Pistons are interested in taking on Tyler Herro.
This would be a bizarre decision for a team that just won 60 games and is looking to compete in the Eastern Conference for years to come. Herro is viewed as a negative-value contract and someone who has a hard time impacting winning, especially in the playoffs. Sure, he could give Detroit some much-needed secondary scoring next to Cade Cunningham, but giving up real assets to take on his contract and build another potential contender within the conference would be a massive mistake.
This part of the deal would only make sense if Detroit was re-routing some assets to Milwaukee, which could mean Isaiah Stewart, Duncan Robinson, Ron Holland, and/or draft picks. If it’s simply matching salary, then I could understand it, but in that case, there’s no reason for them to even get involved in this deal.
Pistons would be nuts to sacrifice real assets for Herro
Miami needs them for their assets, and if Holland, Stewart, or picks are on the table, that would be a bizarre decision from the Pistons’ front office. Herro is also entering the final year of his deal, in which he’ll make $33 million. It’s hard to imagine that in a contract year, the 26-year-old one-time All-Star is going to accept a sixth-man role or fewer off-ball reps, which are the only realistic paths for this to have any chance of working for the Pistons.
We’ve seen all kinds of rumors flying in every direction, and everything that leaks out is likely designed to gain leverage for one team or another. So, maybe this is nothing, but there’s enough noise out there to suggest it’s at least being considered.Â
There’s a chance the Pistons are so desperate for scoring that they bite the bullet and agree to this crazy deal, but hopefully cooler heads prevail. It would ultimately take something like this for the Heat to be able to boost their offer and land the two-time MVP.
