Payton Pritchard's career is defined by perseverance. He attacks the pursuit of his best self with ferocity. When he was glued to the bench, his determination allowed him to break through.

"To be a six-foot white guard and got to the point he has in his career, it's because he works his [expletive] off," said Jayson Tatum at the start of Celtics training camp.

Pritchard's confidence, unwavering love for the game, and his work ethic are superpowers. They've helped him earn Sixth Man of the Year honors and become an NBA champion. Now, it's at the heart of his two-year, $44.2 million contract extension. It's the latest feather in the cap of a defiant career.

Details on Payton Pritchard's contract extension

The six-year veteran already had two years remaining on his deal. Now, he will make $21.2 million in 2028-29. That's 140 percent of the average player salary, the maximum he could sign for that season. It's still incredible value for Boston and just 11.5 percent of that year's salary cap.

Then, there's a $22.9 million mutual option for the 2029-2030 campaign. That would only consume 11.8 percent of the cap. Either side can opt in. However, starting in October 2028, Pritchard becomes eligible to sign another extension.

Sunday at the Auerbach Center, the former first-round pick reflected on his journey and the perseverance it required to reach this point in his career.

"It's kind of been my whole basketball career from high school to college, all that," said Pritchard. "You go through so many ups and downs, you've just gotta keep going, keep getting better every day. You just don't know how far you can take it."

Payton Pritchard is built for Boston

Early in his career, the six-foot-one guard was out of the Celtics' rotation. Stuck behind veteran additions like Dennis Schroder and Malcolm Brogdon, he averaged 14.1 minutes in his second NBA season. His playing time dipped to 13.4 minutes the next year.

Spending most matchups on the bench is torturous. It's mental anguish that breaks a lot of players. They're typically accustomed to being the best player on their team; now, they can't even get in the game.

However, matching the defiant, triumphant spirit of the city he plays in, Pritchard kept pushing.

"I think it's what Boston represents," he said on Sunday. "You go for championships; they hold you to a high standard. The media holds you to a high standard, [the] organization too, and I appreciate being in an environment like that. And I think that it really makes you a better player. It can either break you or really make you. And that's definitely something I want to be a part of."

Payton Pritchard's journey is a lesson for the younger Celtics

Even when the former Oregon star wasn't playing much, he focused on becoming the best version of himself. That chase, a driving force for him, helped him grow behind the scenes.

And when the obstacles in front of him cleared, he helped Boston capture Banner 18. He's also developing into a leader for a roster he's suddenly become the second-longest-tenured player on.

As Joe Mazzulla noted on Sunday at the Auerbach Center, throughout his career, Pritchard maintained "a level of toughness, a level of resilience, but I think a level of open-mindedness."

He has thrived as a starter and coming off the bench. No matter his role, Pritchard embraces it. His mentality and the fortitude it took to blossom into the player he is now are superlative examples for burgeoning talents like Hugo Gonzalez, Baylor Scheierman, and Jordan Walsh. It's also a spirit embodied by both the Celtics guard and the sports-crazed city he relishes playing in.
