LeBron's return to the East opens the door for a dream Celtics scenario

There’s no getting around it. The news of LeBron James’ decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers is tough for Boston Celtics fans. One of the franchise’s top individual rivals is teaming up with one of its longest Eastern Conference foes.

Plus, having to see Jaylen Brown, a franchise legend who will have his jersey retired someday, become “buddy buddy’ with LeBron is sickening.

What if the Celtics get the chance to end LeBron's career???

If there’s one silver lining to all of this, it’s that the Celtics could find themselves with an opportunity to end LeBron’s career for good at some point. We all knew that the Los Angeles Lakers weren’t a threat to make an NBA Finals run and potentially meet Boston there, but there’s a real possibility that Philly could see the Cs in the Eastern Conference Playoffs again.

Now, we haven’t quite gotten word as to whether or not this would be LeBron’s last season in the league or not. Though he did tweet the biggest pumpfake of a retirement statement of all time, where he said this would be his “last decision.”

Considering that his contract has a player option next summer for one final season, that could indicate that these last two years are it.

Let’s be clear. We will know when he’s calling it a career. He’ll tell us all well in advance so he can milk a year or two’s worth of a retirement tour before he’s done. This whole “where is he going to sign” process has been a great reminder that even into his 40s, LeBron loves attention like a teenage girl.

Losing to Celtics would be perfect send-off for LeBron

There would be nothing sweeter than his career ending at the hands of Lucky. Boston has owed him some revenge for basically the entire 2010s, when he went 5-0 against the Cs in the playoffs, before fleeing for the Western Conference for the beginning of his twilight.

The clip of him actively signaling his first departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010, when he ripped the jersey off following a Game 6 loss at TD Garden, is bliss. I’m already imagining one final, passive-aggressive postgame presser where he blames every single person on the 76ers’ roster but himself for the team’s shortcomings.

Unfortunately, this is just a serious batch of fanfiction copium at this point. We have no idea how Philly, or Boston for that matter, is going to look this season. This move certainly bolsters the Sixers’ roster and cements them as a contender in the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, the Celtics, you’d hope, would be able to build off of last season’s success and string another strong season together.
