Now that the question of when Jayson Tatum will return to the Boston Celtics has been answered, the natural next curiosity gap is what Jayson Tatum will look like when he takes the floor against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday.

Being cleared to play isn’t the same thing as being completely back to full game conditioning. There’s undoubtedly going to be a ramp-up period for Tatum as he works his way back into game shape.

Even so, all of the reports coming out about his sharpness have been positive. Most recently, ESPN’s NBA Insider Shams Charania shared that Tatum looks very much like himself, and has “put himself through the gauntlet” to properly prepare himself to return to action.

“I’ve heard from multiple people that have been involved and have seen Jayson Tatum -- even practiced against him, and they say he looks like Jayson Tatum, he looks great,” Charania told Pat McAfee Friday. “He practiced five-on-five, scrimmaged with coaches, scrimmaged with the stay-ready group… so he’s doing five-on-five against them… Then he’s gone against the actual Boston Celtics. So he’s been through every single prong of this that he could possibly go through. He’s put himself through the gauntlet.”

Charania added that there’s still going to be a ramp-up period and that fans shouldn’t expect too much out of Tatum in his season debut.

According to ClutchPoint’s Brett Siegel, Tatum is expected to be restricted to about 20 minutes on Friday night.

Derrick White shared a similar perspective to Charania’s on Wednesday night.

“He looks good,” White told reporters in the locker room after Boston’s 118-89 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. “Playing, moving. It's been good to see him back and getting up and down. You kind of see all the work he's put in to get to this point. And it's been great to see him be able to do what he loves to do.”

The goal now is to reintegrate Tatum into the Celtics' system

As for the reinsertion of Tatum into the Celtics’ lineup, there could be some rebuilding of team chemistry necessary before the group hits its stride.

"I have no idea what it's gonna look like,” White explained at Thursday’s Celtics community event (via CLNS Media). “He hasn't played in a really long time. We all hope it's the best thing in the world, but there are gonna be ups, there are gonna be downs. We're all willing to work through that. The main thing is to win games."

With the amount of turnover the Celtics’ roster saw last summer, there are some new faces that’ll have to develop chemistry with Tatum in the coming weeks. Nikola Vucevic, Luka Garza, Hugo Gonzalez, and even returning players with increased roles like Baylor Scheierman and Jordan Walsh will have some work to do.

The thing about playing in Boston is that everyone is aligned on the ultimate goal of winning a championship. With the start of the playoffs about six weeks away, they’ll waste no time ironing out any kinks that come with re-adding Tatum into the fold.

"We only have 19 games left, so it's gonna have to be a quick process whenever that happens," Sam Hauser explained at Friday’s shootaround. "And as much as you want a grace period for that, we don't really have that luxury. So, we're all just gonna have to figure it out on the fly, and that's a good thing for us to problem solve whenever that comes up, and figure things out on their own. But I think, overall, it's positive."

There may have to be a slight shift in how the Cs gameplan or run their offense, but sacrifice isn’t foreign to them. Head coach Joe Mazzulla smoothly integrated Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis into his system two years ago. There should be no doubt that the same will happen with the second-place Celtics and Tatum.
