Latest Jaylen Brown report suggests he knows he's in Giannis trade talks

ESPN has reported that Brown would not want to play for the Bucks, which means the prospect of being traded for Giannis has at least crossed his mind.

To this point, although it’s been widely speculated that Jaylen Brown has been offered in a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, there has been no firm reporting. In fact, all of the actual reporting is suggesting the opposite, insisting that the Celtics are not dangling Brown and that his name has not been mentioned in any potential deals.

But all the reports can say whatever they want; JB may be reading between the lines and assuming otherwise. Wednesday morning on Sportscenter, Marc Spears of ESPN reported that Jaylen would not want to play for the Milwaukee Bucks. That’s certainly an odd thing to report, considering Brown is on the Celtics and under contract until 2029.

Obviously, the idea here is that Brown is the main piece being mentioned in a possible Celtics trade for Giannis, a rumor that has gained quite a bit of momentum over the last couple of weeks.

Word of a potential trade has made it to Jaylen

It appears that either the reports are false and Brown has been offered in a trade, or he’s just connecting the same dots as everyone else. We know Jaylen is a very smart person, and there’s simply no way he’s completely oblivious to these rumors. It makes sense that a reporter like Spears would ask Jaylen about it, and it also makes sense why Brown, a soon-to-be 30-year-old coming off the best season of his career, wouldn’t want to go play for a team that’s likely entering a full rebuild.

We don’t know much more in the way of firm details here. Maybe Brad Stevens has reached out to Jaylen and told him that there is a chance he gets traded this summer. Maybe Brad assured him the opposite is true. Or maybe, and probably most likely, everything is up in the air, and Brown is more or less in the dark, much like the rest of us.

Celtics can't risk alienating Brown if Giannis trade doesn't happen

It’s clear that whatever’s going on, like usual, the Celtics are keeping things close to the vest. While there have been plenty of credible reports about Boston's interest, it feels intentional that Brown’s name hasn’t been connected to any tangible rumors. The Celtics’ front office knows how delicate this situation is. The last thing they want to do is push for this trade, have it fall through, and risk upsetting Brown in the process, to the point that he wants out, and the rest of the league knows it.

JB is no dummy, and while he must recognize Giannis is a great player, he's a prideful man. He just led a team that many expected to tank to 56 wins and a 2-seed, mostly without Jayson Tatum. He stepped up when nobody believed in Boston and finished 6th in MVP voting. And now they want to trade him? Whether you agree with the possible move or not, it's easy to see why Brown could be frustrated by the situation.

That may sound like a crazy doomsday scenario, but much crazier things have happened. There’s tension in the air, and it feels like Brad and company must come as close to walking a tightrope in the darkness as they can. Once the toothpaste is out of the tube, this thing is over, and they better be all the way sure they’re getting Giannis. If not, tread lightly.
