Lakers' doomsday situation is a massive break for former Celtics icon

The Lakers have experienced the worst injuries at the worst time. Coincidentally, that's the best thing to happen for this Celtics alum!

For the record, there's a distinct difference between rooting against the Los Angeles Lakers and rooting for their injuries. It's fair for any Boston Celtics fan to root for the Lakers' downfall, but no one should be happy that Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves got hurt at the worst time, because that is classless.

Besides, for everything that has gone wrong (and will likely continue to do so) for the Lakers, Doncic's and Reaves' injuries means more touches for their supporting cast, which also means Marcus Smart will get better opportunities to showcase himself.

Smart has lived up to the billing as a diamond-in-the-rough signing for the Lakers. The box score stats do him no justice, as he's given them a legitimate weapon on defense (something they desperately needed) while also being a good influence in their locker room.

The warts are absolutely still there, like they were in Boston (remember when he literally couldn't hit any shots when the Lakers faced the Celtics), but the Lakers haven't had many complaints, just like the Celtics once did. And now, with LA badly undermanned, Smart will get the chance to showcase himself even more than he already has.

Smart could get another boost to his free agency case

Smart has a player option for next season that he will proably opt out of with the season he's had, but with a bigger role he will be forced into, that could up the price on his next deal, whether that's with the Lakers or not.

Will him being a bigger role really save the Lakers from the cards they've been dealt? No, but as long as he keeps the good fight going, that's a huge win for his likely unrestricted free agency this summer.

Celtics fans still have an attachment to Smart after the team surprisingly traded him over the offseason. It turned out to be for the best, but even so, Smart left his mark on the Celtics franchise. He isn't the same Marcus Smart who endeared himself to the fanbase for almost a decade, but he is still a sueful player who deserves to remain in the NBA for as long as possible.

It's a shame that he may play what's left of his prime with the Lakers, but he hasn't gotten in the Celtics way at all since they traded him. Besides, the Lakers' season pretty much died once Doncic and Reaves went down. No matter what happens with Smart, it won't faze Boston.
