It wasn’t his intention, but Jaylen Brown caused more harm than good after going live on his Twitch stream on Sunday, the day after the Celtics got knocked out of the playoffs. JB broke down the loss to the Sixers, but made some waves with comments about how this was his favorite season ever and how it ended with the team going away from its identity.
Then, Tracy McGrady fanned the flames on his podcast with Vince Carter, claiming that Brown is frustrated with the Celtics organization. Noise has been picking up about Brown’s time in Boston, and that he may finally be ready to move on.
Trade rumors were flying left and right, and Brad Stevens was even asked about the situation during his end-of-year press conference on Wednesday. Stevens shut that down quickly, saying that Brown hadn’t expressed any frustration at all towards him, but that didn’t exactly silence the skeptics.
Brown expresses love for Boston
So, on Wednesday night, Brown decided to clear the air and went back on Twitch for another live stream. JB explained that he was disappointed that Brad needed to address the rumors, how he didn’t want to be a distraction, and most importantly, he stated:
“Me and Brad have a great relationship. I love Boston. If it was up to me, I would play in Boston for the next 10 years.”
“Hate that our president of basketball operations had to even respond to this. Me and Brad have a great relationship. I love Boston, if it was up to me I would play in Boston for the next 10 years.”

Brown went on to explain his comments about this being his favorite season, describing how great it was to watch his teammates learn and grow, and get better as a team, and made a point of saying how great it was to watch Jayson Tatum recover from his major injury and come back to help the team.
This story is far from over
And yet, even with these comments from JB, I have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of this. Fans are already reading into his comments about how he emphasized “if it was up to me”, and that he has a great relationship with McGrady, so it’s hard to imagine T-Mac was completely speaking out of turn.
Furthermore, Brown is eligible for a two-year max extension this offseason that will pay him over $70 million a year until 2031. That’s a massive commitment, no matter how badly JB wants to be in Boston. There’s a real chance that Stevens and the powers that be decide this team simply isn’t good enough as currently constructed, and trading Brown for an upgrade is the best path to success.
The Giannis rumors aren’t going away. And if they do, they’ll likely be replaced by rumors about players like Kevin Durant, Donovan Mitchell, or whoever the next hot player du jour becomes. That doesn’t mean JB is gone. But this doesn’t mean he isn’t either. This is just the beginning of what may prove to be a lengthy saga.
