The rumors surrounding the Boston Celtics and Giannis Antetokounmpo have picked up some serious steam over the past week or so. Giannis, who finally seems ready to part ways with the Milwaukee Bucks, reportedly had interest in joining the Cs via trade -- a move that can be accomplished financially simply by including Jaylen Brown’s supermax salary in the swap.
There are other moving parts, like finding a third team to facilitate the deal, that seemingly need to be ironed out before anything actually materializes. Oh, and the Celtics actually have to offer Brown, which recent reports from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Bobby Marks indicate they have not done.
As of now, Brown is still a Celtic. If you ask him, he’s looking forward to next season and feels like he can take his game to another level. Even if Boston doesn’t swing a blockbuster trade for the two-time MVP, they’ve still got a fantastic pairing in Brown and Jayson Tatum.
JB promised fans that they have yet to see the best version of him during his Sunday night stream on Twitch.
"I feel confident in the sense where I'm coming into my physicality, my mental game, my weaknesses are turning into my strengths,” Brown shared. “You have not seen the best version of Jaylen Brown. I look forward to the next season, we'll see where the chips fall."
If Brown improves on this past season, where he earned his second All-NBA selection after posting career-highs in both points and assists, while tying a career-best in rebounds then the rest of the league better watch out.
Sunday marked the first time that Brown had spoken on stream since returning from his recent trip to China.
Brown could want out of Boston if the Celtics mishandle trade negotiations
Waiting to see where the chips fall, though, is an ominous way to end the promise. It’s fair. Who knows where Brown will be when training camp rolls around. If the Cs include him in a Giannis blockbuster then he could be rerouted to any team that’s interested in having him.
If they don’t wind up doing a deal with the Bucks, Brown could hold a grudge against the organization because his name was so heavily included in rumors to start the offseason -- a possibility that both Windhorst and Marks hinted at on ESPN’s NBA Today on Monday.
"A lot of people are making assumptions about what the Celtics will offer,” Windhorst said. “I think the Celtics are going to be very, very cautious about making any firm offer. I will be very careful about saying anything has truly been offered."
"You ought to be awfully careful if something does not materialize [if Brown knows he was offered in a trade],” Marks chimed in.

"Boston is also out there because Giannis from what I am told is willing to extend his contract in Boston. I think the Celtics are gonna be very, very cautious with making any firm offer and I would be very careful before saying anything has truly been offered" pic.twitter.com/KpPMaH2tia
As crazy as it may sound for Brown to be upset about being the price Boston would hypothetically have to pay for Giannis, he did win Finals MVP just under two years ago. After spending 10 years with the franchise, he probably feels he deserves more than being sent out in a trade.
Unfortunately, it can be a cruel business.
