Hugo Gonzalez has hit a bizarre rookie wall at the worst time for the Celtics

It's not like he's doing much wrong, but for some reason, the Celtics have been much worse when he's on the floor lately.

Hugo Gonzalez's rookie numbers have never jumped off the page, but throughout the season, he has made plays that have had Boston Celtics fans jumping out of their seats. 3.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, 0.6 steals, and 0.3 blocks while shooting 47% from the field and 35.5% from three will, at best, get a shrug, but it's been hard not to notice what Gonzalez does when he's on the floor.

Besides the "WOW!" plays Gonzalez has made throughout the season, net rating has been one of his biggest boosters this season, as the Celtics have been plus-6.3 when he's on the floor overall this season, per NBA.com. However, Gonzalez's production has lately declined in net rating, and hard.

Since his breakout game against Milwaukee, there seems to have been some sort of shift in his impact for the Celtics. From opening night until the Celtics' last game against the Bucks on March 2, the Celtics' net rating with Gonzalez on the floor has been a plus-12.3, per NBA.com. The only one with a higher net rating over that span was Derrick White (plus-12.8).

But since then, the Celtics' net rating with Gonzalez has done a 180. They haven't been neutral with Gonzalez; they've been bad. Since March 3, the Celtics have been minus-23.7 with the rookie, per NBA.com.

It's hard to say exactly what the root cause of this has been. Every rookie has that wall, and Gonzalez has clearly proven he's not immune to that, even when it's not exactly clear what changed. It's been hard to detect what has gone wrong, and he has actually had good performances in games Boston needed him to.

Gonzalez's decline coincides with Baylor Scheierman's emergence & Jayson Tatum's return

Lately, the talk of the town in Boston has been both the return of Jayson Tatum and the impressive play of Baylor Scheierman. With each passing game, Tatum has looked like the perennial All-Star that guided the Celtics to Banner 18 back in 2024.

His consistency isn't completely back yet, but the potency of his presence has only loomed larger and larger to the point that he already won Eastern Conference Player of the Week less than a month into his return.

Tatum's return has meshed well with Scheier-mania, as the Celtics' sophomore sensation has thrived as Boston has called his name more often. Scheierman's basketball IQ and abilities as a jack-of-all-trades wing have filled many gaps for the Celtics.

Is that why suddenly Gonzalez has fallen off? It's hard to say, but it feels like it's too notable to be a coincidence. He's a rookie who has had to deal with plenty of changes as the season has gone on, which can't be easy. Hopefully, in due time, he'll adjust, but he doesn't have much time to do so.

This isn't a problem, but it'd be nice to see Gonzalez return to form soon

Again, rookie walls are fairly common, so it felt inevitable that Gonzalez would hit his at some point, but he's hit his just as the season is about to come to a close. His calling card was making the Celtics better when he was on the floor. Tatum can fill that void, sure (it's his too!), but is it too much to ask that they could both do this?

It's also not the end of the world if Gonzalez can't break out of this rather unique funk. The Celtics are so well-built that they can withstand one of their players going through a slump. They were the No. 2 seed with Tatum out, and are 8-1 with Brown out. Needless to say, Gonzalez's struggles shouldn't be too hard to adjust to.

Gonzalez has a very promising future in Boston who simply has had his worst stretch at the worst time. There's no telling if he'll be able to play himself out of this, but because he's already played above and beyond what the Celtics asked of him, they'll be perectly okay if he can't.
