Gabe Vincent remains a free agent after all this time. The Miami Heat alum who once delighted in torching the Boston Celtics on the NBA's biggest stage hasn't garnered much interest this summer. Earlier, there were concerns that Vincent would return to Miami to play for the team that got the best out of him, but apparently, that isn't the case.
The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson revealed that the Heat have not been in touch with Vincent, though New York had contacted. It's true the Knicks will be the team to beat in the East, but there's no telling if Mike Brown has the same magic Erik Spoelstra with players like Vincent.
Plus, if he did, then Vincent would be on the Knickerbockers by now. Anyway, that should take a load off the Celtics' minds (Note: there's no confirmed intel that Boston was keeping their eyes on this). Vincent going back to the Heat would have been a little scary. So much so that bringing him back just to keep him away from the Heat would have been a defensible option.
Even if that happened, a betting man would say Boston will likely use their final roster spot on the intriguing prospect Devin Carter.
But could Vincent re-discover his Celtics killing magic somewhere else?
Who's to say the Celtics kryptonite he possesses in his basketball resides exclusively in South Beach? To be fair, what he did to Boston likely played in why the Lakers of all teams paid him a massive raise to come play for them, but he turned out to be a disaster for them.
And things didn't get better in Atlanta. If it did, he would have caught on somewhere. It's clear that if Vincent finds a new team, it's going to be about as buy-low as it gets.
Teams won't sign him because they believe he'll re-create the miraculous output he gave against Boston while playing for Miami. Rather, they would add him believing he could contribute in his own way, which could then pave the way for him to re-discover that form.
The Celtics can take solace knowing Vincent will not get the chance to do what he did to them three years ago, but they are not out of the woods completely until they know that he's out of the NBA. They shouldn't be rooting for him to be out of the NBA. Rather, just for him to never tap into whatever that was in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals...
