Las Vegas -- When it came to their pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Boston Celtics held firm. The idea of giving up Jaylen Brown, multiple first-round picks, and possibly including Hugo Gonzalez and Baylor Scheierman in their package to Milwaukee was too steep a request. Instead, the Bucks sent their franchise star to South Beach.
With the Celtics punting on the chance to acquire a two-time NBA MVP, there figures to be some who put Gonzalez's play under a microscope. For example, it would not be a surprise to hear talking heads on the radio use any of the second-year wing's disappointing performances to question why Brad Stevens didn't make the trade.
Those nights are inevitable during an 82-game season. People using them in bad faith, as if the 20-year-old from Madrid has to be at the peak of his powers this season, feels that way as well.
As Gonzalez aims to keep his critics quiet, the Celtics' Summer League head coach, Amile Jefferson, delivered a message that captured why he's still in Boston and Antetokounmpo is a member of the Miami Heat.

Speaking after the Sin City C's final Summer League tilt at Thomas & Mack Arena, the team's bench boss, who has the makings of a future NBA head coach, discussed the work the burgeoning wing has put in on the court and in the weight room.

What Gonzalez showcased at Summer League was an improved handle. He also looked smooth launching pull-up 3s. It's an intriguing potential addition to his arsenal.
However, what's most impressive is his physique, athleticism, and basketball IQ at this age. He learns fast, reads the game well, and adapts quickly. It speaks to a work ethic that matches his desire to become his best self.
So, yes, there will be growing pains along the way. However, the Celtics didn't hold on to their promising young wing with just this coming campaign in mind. They rightfully see someone with immense potential. He has both an elevated floor and a high ceiling.
Gonzalez is already a trusted defensive option against top scorers. Offensively, he's a savvy cutter who generates extra possessions. He can also make an impact with his screening and as a secondary playmaker.
There's no telling how much his game will evolve at that end of the floor. But he's six years away from entering his prime. His drive has taken him this far. It has also persuaded Boston to pass on Antetokounmpo. Instead, the Celtics are more compelled by the idea of helping Gonzalez blossom into a player who validates choosing a promising young wing over a 32-year-old star.
