There was a clear message sent to Jaylen Brown by the officials in the Celtics' 123-110 loss to the Magic.

Jaylen Brown took 28 shots in the Boston Celtics' 123-110 loss to the Orlando Magic at the Kia Center on Friday night. He attempted 12 of those from inside the paint. Despite his aggressive approach and repeated downhill attacks, he only made one trip to the free-throw line.

When asked about what changed after he generated 30 points through three quarters before registering only two in the final frame, the four-time All-Star had this to say.

"I think in the fourth quarter -- I think the officials made their point. So, I get it. I'll keep my mouth closed," said Brown.

It will be interesting to see what type of whistle the former Finals MVP gets on Sunday when the Celtics and Magic square off in the second half of this mini-series.

Sloppy play and the Magic's sharpshooting sink the Celtics

Whatever Sunday's rematch brings, it won't change that Friday's loss is a devastating blow to Boston's NBA Cup hopes. Late in the final frame, the hosts struck last, turning a tightly contested matchup into a double-digit victory.

It wasn't just a matter of Orlando leveling up. Josh Minott, who is seizing his opportunity and proving he was a hidden gem while buried on the Minnesota Timberwolves' bench, gift-wrapped a turnover on a pass under the visitors' basket. The Celtics had five giveaways in a sloppy fourth quarter. There was also a take foul by Neemias Queta away from the ball on center Goga Bitadze in the backcourt.

There was also the frustrating reality of seeing the Magic suddenly find their rhythm from behind the arc. The hosts entered the night shooting 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. That was on 31 attempts per game. On Friday against the Celtics, Orlando took 36 threes and converted on a blistering 47.2 percent of them.

That includes Jalen Suggs knocking down four of the six shots he hoisted from behind the arc. Tristan da Silva came off the bench to bury three of the five triples he launched.

When asked about whether the Magic's hot shooting forced the visitors to adjust their defensive game plan, per CLNS Media, Payton Pritchard responded, "I mean, I feel like we did good. We came all the way back. They just made another push."

Unfortunately for the Celtics, that push arrived when it mattered most, and the margin for error was at its lowest. It was also when Boston was at its worst. While Orlando gained a sliver of revenge for the former bouncing the Magic from the playoffs last season, the visitors will now look to return the favor and win the second half of this mini-series on Sunday.
