According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Boston Celtics have exercised the $2.74 million team option for the next season of Baylor Scheierman’s rookie contract.

Basically, this means that Boston has seen enough from Scheierman, where they’ve decided that they want to bring him back for a third season next year. If they weren’t impressed, they could’ve elected to decline his option, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent, and them an extra $2.7 million in cap space.

Scheierman joined the Celtics last June when they selected him 30th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft. The former Creighton standout became Brad Stevens’ first-ever first-round pick. The Celtics' President of Basketball Operations had only made second-round picks up to that point.

Scheierman’s first season-plus in Boston hasn’t been much to write home about. He was drafted to an NBA Championship roster where just about every player was brought back. The avenue for minutes simply wasn’t there for him as a rookie. He made just 31 appearances for the Cs, playing about 12.4 minutes in each outing. Scheierman averaged 3.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 35.5% from the field and 31.7% from beyond the arc.

There were some bright spots, though.

Scheierman made the most of his minutes later in the season with huge performances against the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets. He set a career-high with 15 points against the Sixers in early March, then did it again when he scored 20 points against the Nets on 7-8 from the field.

What should fans expect from Baylor Scheierman this season?

As far as what he’ll bring to the table this season, now that there are more minutes up for grabs, it almost feels too soon to tell. Joe Mazzulla has gotten creative with his lineups throughout Boston’s first five games, seemingly inserting and removing different role players every game.

Scheierman did impress during his brief stint in Wednesday’s win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was tasked with guarding Cavs star Donovan Mitchell for a few minutes in the second half, which did not go unnoticed.

“I thought, even Baylor’s five or six possessions guarding Donovan Mitchell [were impressive],” Mazzulla praised postgame. “He executed the game plan.”

Back at Media Day, Scheierman pointed out how much emphasis he'd put on defense during the offseason.

Only time will tell what Mazzulla has in mind for the sophomore guard this season, but it feels like there’s going to be some real opportunity for him sooner or later. Regardless, he’ll be around for at least another season after this one.
