The Boston Celtics are fresh off their 18th title in franchise history, and most players on the roster have a solidified place within the organization. Guys like Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White aren’t going anywhere. Even players further down the roster like Jordan Walsh and Baylor Scheierman will likely be around for a while. Some former Celtics aren’t so lucky.
Though the Celtics have effectively the same roster this year as they did last season, there has been some changes in recent seasons. For some, such as Svi Mykhailiuk and Malcolm Brogdon, that just means a change of landscape. But for others, the job market has dried up.
Here are five former Celtics players who still don’t have jobs in 2025.
1. Oshae Brissett
The most recent example on this list, Oshae Brissett was on the Celtics’ championship roster last season but does not have a job playing professional basketball this year.
He’s been detailing some of his outside life on his YouTube channel, Brissy TV, giving fans an inside look at what he gets up to. Still, he’s not on an NBA roster.
When on the court, Brissett’s hustle and rebounding stood out, but his lack of an offensive game has prevented him from finding a permanent home.
2. Tremont Waters
When the Celtics drafted Tremont Waters in 2019, he was a bit of an afterthought. However, he actually played some real minutes for Boston during his time there.
In recent years, Waters has popped up around the basketball landscape. He played with Victor Wembanyama in France and for the Puerto Rican national team.
But as of now, Waters is not on a professional basketball roster. His height last likely been a leading factor holding him back throughout the years.
3. Nik Stauskas
Though Nik Stauskas only played for the Celtics for a fleeting moment in time, he was on the team when they made their run to the 2022 NBA Finals.
Immediately before signing with the team, Stauskas put up big-time numbers in the G League, and at 31 years old, he could still have some playing years left.
However, he’s not on a team at the moment, and it’s looking like his time playing professional basketball could be coming to a close.
4. James Young
For Celtics fans, James Young was one of the first names that brought hope after the Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen years, as he was a first-round pick in the same draft that brought them Marcus Smart.
Young never amounted to much during his time in green, and after four short years in the NBA, he was out of the league.
Since then, Young has bounced around some international clubs, but now at 29 years old, he’s not on a professional roster.
5. Isaiah Thomas
At 35 years old, Isaiah Thomas’ days playing professional basketball may be behind him. However, he was on an NBA roster heading into the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
Thomas signed a pair of 10-days with the Phoenix Suns toward the tail-end of last year and eventually signed a contract for the remainder of the season.
However, he’s no longer in Phoenix, and now, he’s not playing anywhere.
