The Boston Celtics clearly do not view Jaylen Brown as a superstar after trying to trade him and two first-round draft picks for Giannis Antetokounmpo. It was not enough as the Miami Heat gave up Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 3 first-round picks, 1 first-round swap, and 1 second-rounder to land the Greek Freak. Boston must shake up their roster after a first-round playoff exit. They tried to get Giannis, and fans can see Shams Charania’s tweet below.

Giannis is one of the best players on the planet, but Brown finished sixth in MVP voting and led the Celtics to the second seed in the Eastern Conference. He was the Finals MVP in 2024. Brown is a superstar, but Boston is clearly not viewing him that way. That stance could ultimately cost them JB.

The Celtics were not shopping Brown, but were willing to trade him for Giannis. They are not committed to moving on now that the Greek Freak is headed to Miami. Still, there appears to be a disconnect between how Brown sees himself and what the organization thinks.

The Celtics aren’t viewing Jaylen Brown as a superstar

Shams expanded on his take on SportsCenter. He noted this is the second time Boston has offered Brown in a trade, and things could get sticky in his extension talks.

Brown has three years left on a max contract, but he will want an extension. The 29-year-old is right in the middle of his prime and just proved he can be the best player on a contending team. Everybody thought this would be a gap year for the Celtics after Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in the 2025 playoffs, but Brown had other ideas. He kept Boston in the thick of contention and played like a superstar.

What more does JB have to do? He won Finals MVP in 2024. Brown was second-team All-NBA for the second time. He just finished sixth in MVP voting and would have been in the top four if the NBA didn’t allow Luka Doncic and Cade Cunningham to be exempt from the 65-game rule.

Brown is one of the 15 best players in the world. The Ringer just ranked him 14th, but the Celtics are not viewing him that way. Boston wouldn’t give up the superstar and two first-round picks for Giannis if they were. The Greek Freak has a lengthy injury history. There would be no need to take that risk.

The Boston Celtics clearly do not view Jaylen Brown as a superstar after trying to trade him for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Shams Charania spilled the tea, even though Boston didn’t win the bidding. Giannis is headed to the Heat, but there are still questions about Brown’s future.

JB wants to be the best player on his team. He proved he can lead his team into title contention this year, but the Celtics aren’t viewing him like an alpha. This situation likely gets messier from here, so Boston fans should be monitoring the developments closely. Brown may be traded in short order, especially if extension talks go south. The Celtics have nobody to blame but themselves.
