According to Shams Charania and Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, Wyc Grousbeck will no longer stay on board with the Boston Celtics as part of the sale, which is slated to transfer ownership to Bill Chisholm. The original plan was for Grousbeck to be with the organization through 2028, but now, that is no longer the case. Grousbeck has been a friendly face for Celtics fans to latch onto, and his place alongside Chisholm was supposed to make the transition less worrisome.

“Wyc Grousbeck will no longer stay on as governor as part of the Boston Celtics' $6.1 billion sale to Bill Chisholm, sources tell me and @ramonashelburne,” Charania wrote on Twitter. “Plan had been for Grousbeck to remain through 2028. Chisholm assumes governor title and the transfer will be finalized soon.”

Chisholm and the group he purchased the team with will now be the sole owner of the Celtics.

What happened wth Bill Chisholm and Wyc Grousbeck?

As of now, there is no clear indication as to what happened to change the plan that was set in place. Grousbeck staying on as part of the deal was supposedly a part of why the sale went through to Chisholm over other buyers.

Grousbeck and his family purchased the Celtics in 2002, overseeing two NBA Championship runs in 2008 and 2024. He has been an integral part of the organization from the moment he set foot in Boston.

Right after the sale was announced, Grousbeck noted that Chisholm asked him to stick around and help with the transition:

“Bill is a terrific person and a true Celtics fan, born and raised here in the Boston area,” Grousbeck said via Business Wire. “His love for the team and the city of Boston, along with his chemistry with the rest of the Celtics leadership, make him a natural choice to be the next Governor and controlling owner of the team. I know he appreciates the importance of the Celtics and burns with a passion to win on the court while being totally committed to the community. Quite simply, he wants to be a great owner.

“He has asked me to run the team as CEO and Governor for the first three years, and stay on as his partner, and I am glad to do so.”

Not only was Grousbeck supposed to stay on board through 2028, but he was going to play a large role in running the team. He and Chisholm were going to be partners.

Now, Chisholm, a lifelong Celtics fan who has been very present around the team since the sale was announced, will take over as the new owner in town, and Grousbeck will no longer be a part of the organization.
