Shortly after winning Banner 18 this past June, the Boston Celtics got thrown for a loop. Well, the fanbase did, at least. Within two weeks of the championship parade, it was revealed that Wyc Grousbeck and his family would be selling their majority stake in the team, meaning there would soon be new front-facing owners of the Celtics.

Since then, there hasn’t been much legitimate news regarding who the new owner could eventually be. However, the initial bids for the team recently came in, and there have been some rumors as to who could be in the mix. Bill Simmons of The Ringer was on the case.

And one of the potential options could be ideal for Celtics fans.

Jeffrey Lurie could be ideal new Celtics owner for fans

According to Simmons on his podcast, The Bill Simmons Podcast, one of the bidders who is hoping to purchase the Celtics is Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.

At first glance, an owner focusing his efforts in Philadelphia may not be who Boston fans want running their squad. However, a quick investigation reveals that Lurie could be the perfect guy to please Celtics fans.

See, before Lurie’s wealth grew into the billions, he was a New England guy. Lurie was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended a bunch of different schools in the state.

Lurie attended Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, Boston University in Boston, and Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Obviously, as a person with that sort of background often is, Lurie is a Boston sports fan, and that includes the Celtics. That means, should he win the bid to buy the team, Boston would have a Celtics fan as the owner of the team. That’s a massive win for the fanbase.

Plus, Lurie has done a pretty solid job of running the Eagles since taking over the team in 1994. They won their first championship in 2018 and are now worth roughly $6.6 billion.

Grousbeck has done a great job of putting the Celtics in the best-possible position to succeed. And for the past few years, that job has been highlighted by his willingness to spend in order to compete for a championship.

One of the biggest concerns with new ownership coming in is the possibility that they will use the purchase of the Celtics as an investment opportunity rather than trying to help the team succeed.

Considering Lurie’s background as a Boston native and his willingness to help the Eagles push for championships, those concerns don’t ring too loudly when looking at his bid.

And if he were to buy the team and prove that idea true, it would be a dream for Celtics fans.
