Former Boston Celtics wing Romeo Langford was traded to the New York Knicks’ G League affiliate, the Westchester Knicks, earlier this summer (July 8). Well, his returning player rights were, at least. Langford hasn’t actually played in a G League game since the 2023-24 season, when he appeared in 30 games for the Salt Lake City Stars.
Westchester traded the returning rights to Higen Hasegawa, who was the No. 10 pick in the 2025 International G League Draft, in exchange for Langford. There’s no guarantee that Langford ever suits up for Westchester, but if he did decide to attempt a return to NBA basketball (he played three games for BCM Gravelines in France this past year), it would be with the Knicks.
It’s been a long road since the Celtics selected Langford with the 14th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
How did Romeo Langford pan out with Celtics?
When the Celtics picked Langford back in 2019, he was coming off a relatively rough freshman season at Indiana. However, he was a top prospect coming out of high school, and Boston took a chance on him at the tail end of the lottery.
However, he didn’t play a ton during his short time with the Celtics, appearing in just 50 games through his first two years, playing 11.6 minutes per game his rookie campaign and 15.7 his sophomore season.
By the time his third season in the NBA came around, Langford was on the chopping block. And he did, in fact, get chopped. The Celtics included him in the deal with the San Antonio Spurs that saw Derrick White head to Boston.
Langford, Josh Richardson, and multiple first-round picks were sent to San Antonio, and in return, the Celtics got a guy who ended up being a crucial part of their 2024 NBA Championship run (and will be a part of their future for, seemingly, a long time).
The year he got traded, Langford only appeared in four games for the Spurs, but the following season, he got on the floor in 43 games. That season, the 2022-23 campaign, Langford played 19.6 minutes, averaging 6.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 46.7% from the field and 26.2% from deep.
Since then, Langford played a season of G League ball with Salt Lake City in 2023-24, but did not play much this past calendar year.
The Knicks decided to add his returning player rights, but Langford’s chances in the NBA may be over.
