According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Boston Celtics have converted JD Davison’s two-way contract to a standard two-year NBA deal. Davison was the MVP of the G League this past season and led the Maine Celtics on a run to the Eastern Conference finals, where they eventually lost to Mac McClung and the Osceola Magic.
The 22-year-old guard has been in the Celtics organization since being drafted by the team ahead of the 2022-23 season. This was his third and final year on a two-way contract, meaning the Celtics had an important decision to make. And for the time being, it seems as though Boston has made that choice.
But the news comes with an important note about the future, too.
Celtics convert JD Davison's two-way contract to standard deal
The Celtics did more than simply convert Davison’s deal to a standard contract for the remainder of the season—they handed him a second year on the deal as well.
The Boston Celtics are converting guard JD Davison, the G League MVP, to a standard, two-year NBA contract, agent Corey Marcum tells ESPN. Davison, who has played 34 career NBA games, averaged 25.1 points, 7.6 assists and 5.6 rebounds for G League Maine this season. pic.twitter.com/7qcmGWVoEG

This is a fairly standard practice with most two-way contract conversions, and the second season on the deal is almost certainly a team option, but it still could provide some use for the Celtics moving forward.
Boston will be entering a question-filled summer. They have been a second-apron team for the past two years, and staying in that range for a third year would do serious damage to their future (via the CBA’s restrictions).
In order for them to get out of the second apron, they will have to trade one of their top guys, and it has been speculated that said player will be either Jrue Holiday or Kristaps Porzingis.
If Holiday is the one to be moved, it will leave the Celtics with a need for extra guard depth, and that’s where having a team option on Davison could come into the picture.
Though he has been unable to show off his skills at the NBA level, Davison’s play in the G League has been extraordinary. Allowing him regular opportunities to play a role within the Celtics offense could do wonders for his confidence and consistency.
At the very least, having the option to bring back Davison should give the Celtics a bit of relief as they scour potential trade options this summer in hopes of ducking the second apron.
And for the time being, rewarding Davison’s three years of hard work with a standard deal, meaning he’ll get to sit on the bench and be a part of the team during the playoffs, is a phenomenal gesture.
A gesture that Davison very much earned.
