The release date for Season 2 of Netflix’s “Starting Five,” which will feature Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, has been set. Subscribers will be able to watch all episodes of the series starting on Oct. 16.

Brown’s inclusion in the project was announced last October, just after the Celtics raised Banner 18 to TD Garden’s rafters. Viewers will follow Brown, Kevin Durant, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Tyrese Haliburton, and James Harden through their respective 2024-25 seasons.

Netflix probably couldn’t have gotten a better slate of storylines to accompany the group of players. Of course, Gilgous-Alexander won the MVP award and led the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first-ever NBA title, beating Haliburton’s Indiana Pacers in seven games.

The Pacers guard had a tremendous playoff run up until Game 7 of the Finals, when he ruptured his Achilles. To that point, he had nailed a record four game-winning shots throughout Indy’s historic run.

Durant and Harden each have enough star power to be appealing regardless of their team’s outcome for the season. Never mind Harden’s part in the LA Clippers’ classic first-round series against the Denver Nuggets, and the unraveling of KD’s Big 3 that never was in Phoenix.

The Celtics' presence in Season 2 will certainly differ from Season 1

JB’s year was an intriguing one, too. The Celtics had just won Banner 18 and carried the goal of becoming the first repeat champions in seven years with them throughout the entire season. Plus, Brown battled a lingering knee issue, which we now know to be a partial meniscus tear, late in the campaign and through the playoffs. The launch of his 741 clothing brand will likely be a fun piece in this as well.

The ending for Brown’s Netflix story certainly won’t be as sweet as Jayson Tatum’s was in the show’s pilot season. Tatum, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis, Anthony Edwards, and Jimmy Butler rounded out the season one cast. Episode 10 almost solely focused on Tatum and the Cs as they accomplished their ultimate goal of capturing an NBA Championship in 2024.

Reliving the glory was an exciting way to ramp up for the upcoming NBA season.

This year, Celtics fans will instead be treated to reliving two horrible playoff collapses against the New York Knicks, leading to the team’s earlier-than-expected exit from the postseason.

As gutwrenching as it may be, the series should get the basketball juices going in the days preceding the tip-off of the 2025-26 season.
