According to Bobby Manning of CLNS Media, the Boston Celtics are signing Jay Scrubb to an Exhibit 10 contract. Scrubb showed out during Summer League in 2023, eventually earning a two-way spot with Boston. However, he tore his ACL in training camp prior to the start of the season.

Since then, he has reportedly remained around the team during his rehab process, and Manning stated the team’s intention was to sign him once he had fully recovered from his injury. Now, it seems as though that time has come. Scrubb was spotted at the Auerbach Center during training camp this year, so this signing makes sense with that information in mind.

That said, Scrubb signing with the Celtics means more moves have to be on the way.

Celtics signing Jay Scrubb means someone will have to be released

As things stand, the Celtics have 21 players on the roster—the maximum number a team is allowed to have during the offseason. That means if they are signing Scrubb, someone will have to be released.

Immediately, guys like Tristan Enaruna, Ron Harper Jr., and Dmytro Skapintsev jump to mind, as they seem to have the longest shots to make the Celtics’ final roster. All three could potentially play with the Maine Celtics this season.

Boston only has one spot open, and rumblings have indicated their desire to keep it free in an attempt to maintain roster flexibility and save a bit of money. However, signing Scrubb to an Exhibit 10 contract clears the way for him to play in Maine.

Players who ink a training camp deal with an organization receive a bonus if they play for the squad’s G League team that season. That seems like the ideal pathway for Scrubb, who is hoping to find his way back to the NBA after a year-long recovery process.

In the 2023 Summer League, Scrubb appeared in five games for the Celtics, playing 20.4 minutes per contest. He averaged 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 46.3% from the floor and 40.0% from behind the three-point line.

Keeping Scrubb around was more than just an act of good faith for the Celtics. Based on the way he played in Summer League, it’s not hard to believe that they think he could be an impactful player down the line.

At just 24 years old, he still has plenty of room to grow as a player, and if his three-point shot continues to improve, he could be an intriguing piece to watch in Maine.
