The Boston Celtics pulled off an absolute heist in acquiring Derrick White at the 2022 trade deadline, and Brad Stevens could repeat the feat by trading Anfernee Simons for Daniel Gafford. In the White deal, Boston got a cost-controlled contract for two expiring contracts and a first-round draft pick. The guard has continued to improve on the Celtics, and repeating this masterpiece could make Boston a title contender again.

Gafford is reportedly on the trade block (subscription required) and was a starter on the 2024 Mavericks that the Celtics defeated in the NBA Finals. Boston needs a center upgrade to round out their roster, and the 6’10 big man is just reaching his prime. This could be the perfect chance for history to repeat itself.

White immediately bought into the Celtics' way and has thrived in his role. He is finally getting the chance to expand his offensive wings this season with Tatum out. Fans know he will do whatever is possible to help Boston win, and they could get another value contract on their books that fits perfectly.

Celtics could repeat Derrick White masterpiece with Anfernee Simons trade

Boston traded Jrue Holiday to get Simons’ $27.6 million expiring salary. It was a cost-cutting measure for the Celtics. They have already explored his trade market and would love to get under the luxury tax line.

Simons is not a long-term solution for Boston. His numbers are down as the 6’3 guard has settled into a bench role. He will be looking for a payday in the offseason that Boston is unwilling to dish out.

This trade would take a third team, but it could be perfect. Dallas and Boston could save money if the Nets acquire Simons. It would mean Dallas would have to take back a couple of unwanted contracts, but it works for all involved.

Gafford just signed a three-year $54 million extension that keeps him under team control through 2029. White had three-plus seasons left on his contract when Boston acquired him. The Celtics would still be comfortably under the first apron next season with Gafford in the fold and Jayson Tatum fully back from his Achilles injury.

They would have the center position locked down between Neemias Queta and the new addition. Boston would need a healthy Tatum and to keep a strong supporting cast around him. Getting Gafford could be perfect, just like the Derrick White trade was. Don’t be surprised to see the big man reach a new level in Boston and quickly help make the Celtics favorites to win the Eastern Conference.

Brad Stevens is a master roster builder. He made all the right moves to bring the Boston Celtics a championship in 2024. Fans know he will quickly be all-in when Tatum is healthy. Expect the Celtics to trade Anfernee Simons before the deadline, and it will likely be another exceptional move that has fans excited for the rest of the season. That is just what the best do.
