Long-time Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck and current Celtics investor Aditya Mittal could have their sights set on a new opportunity in the sports ownership world. According to a Thursday morning report from Sportico’s Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams, Grousbeck and Mittal are preparing a bid to buy the Seattle Seahawks.

“Aditya Mittal, a member of one of India’s richest families and an investor in the Boston Celtics, along with former Celtics control owner Wyc Grousbeck, are preparing a bid for the NFL champion Seattle Seahawks, according to multiple people familiar with the process,” the report read.

Grousbeck, who served as the face of Celtics ownership from 2002 up until last year when the team was sold to a group led by Bill Chisholm, is slated to remain on board in Boston through 2028 to ensure a smooth transition between regimes.

Should he and Mittal have the winning bid for the Seahawks, the plan is reportedly for Grousbeck to live out in Seattle “part-time” so he can oversee franchise operations.

“Mittal contributed about $1 billion to the 2025 Celtics takeover, his first major move into U.S. sports. Mittal and Grousbeck were the only signatures on the letter of interest submitted to Allen & Company, which was hired to handle the sale, according to the people, who were granted anonymity because the details are private. Since Mittal lives in London, Grousbeck would reside in Seattle part-time and effectively operate the franchise.”

If this is the end for Grousbeck in Boston, he'll be remembered fondly

The report did not include details as to when the Seahawks sale was officially expected to go down, but this news confirms that fans shouldn’t expect to see Grousbeck around the Celtics for much longer.

At the very least, he is looking for a more lucrative opportunity, considering the NFL’s popularity, after selling the Celtics.

Grousbeck’s tenure in Boston was a successful one to say the very least. The Celtics won two NBA titles during that span, one in 2008 and another in 2024, reached the Eastern Conference Finals 10 times.

They missed the playoffs just four times, as many as they’d reached the NBA Finals.

Going forward, the hope is that the Celtics remain in good hands with Chisholm, who is a noted lifelong fan of the franchise.

"Ultimately, this was an opportunity that was a dream, a dream that came true," Chisholm said of his decision to buy the team last summer. "I can't speak for other people, but for me, to have this chance, I would have never forgiven myself if I didn't go for it."

The Massachusetts native seems eager to carry on a winning tradition in Boston.

“Let’s go for it, but let’s do it in a reasonable way,” Chisholm shared. “My goal and my high-level direction for Brad [Stevens] and the team was let’s do whatever we can to win championships and raise banners and raise as many as we can both in the near term, but also in the medium-to-the-long term as well. So definitely taking that approach and the flexibility that Brad talks about, I think that’s paramount to doing that, but ultimately, we’re gonna do everything we can to win. That is job number one.”

Chisholm and his family can be seen sitting courtside at just about every Celtics home game. Thus far, he’s proven to be an active figure within the organization, rather than a shadow owner like the guy who owns the baseball team down the street.
