Year two in the NBA was a breakout season for Baylor Scheierman. A lot of that had to do with the fact that he continued to transform his physique. That allowed him to handle difficult defensive assignments.
The six-foot-six wing guarded the likes of Kevin Durant, Tyrese Maxey, Cade Cunningham, and Cooper Flagg. His hustle plays and willingness to crash the glass also helped the Boston Celtics consistently win the possession battle.
Now, the former Creighton star wants to make more of an impact with his on-ball reads. His ability to do so is one reason to buy more Scheierman stock ahead of next season.
On the first day of training camp, his hustle and skill caught the attention of new teammate Mike Conley.
Baylor Scheierman is quickly impressing Mike Conley
At the Auerbach Center on Wednesday, the former All-Star shared a moment during Day 1 of camp that sounds worthy of a Tommy Point.
"Baylor has impressed me a lot," said Conley. "The other day, Baylor, I think, got like four offensive rebounds in one possession. And I just said, 'I like him.' That's all I needed to know. I like him."
Along with his determination when pursuing offensive rebounds and his knack for extending possessions, Scheierman's ability to make the right reads stood out to the veteran guard.
That's no surprise, given the former high school star quarterback's floor vision and comfort making plays off the dribble. However, catching someone like Conley's attention bodes well for how he wants to build on his breakout season.
Baylor Scheierman is ready to ascend
Jaylen Brown is now a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. While the former Finals MVP built an unbreakable bond with the city and left a lasting impact on the franchise, there are now more opportunities to be had this year in Boston.
As Brad Stevens said at his introductory press conference, "One thing about Baylor is I know that he'll be prepared to take advantage of it because he does, he works, he brings it every day, and he looks good right now."
The six-foot-six wing's physical evolution has continued this summer. Among other areas, it will help him grow defensively. You can also bet that he put in the work to level up as a playmaker. The Celtics' offensive identity this season will center on making the right reads and having the versatility to capitalize on what the defense gives them.
Between that and the version of himself he wants to become, a dynamic talent appears poised to make another leap. Just ask his new teammate, Mike Conley.
