The Minnesota-to-Boston pipeline has been incredibly strong in recent sports history. David Ortiz got his start with the Twins before becoming a Red Sox legend, Randy Moss starred as a Viking before setting records with the Patriots, and, of course, Kevin Garnett spent most of his career with the Timberwolves before forming the iconic “Big 3” with the Celtics.
And now, could Anthony Edwards be the next Minnesota-grown superstar to leave for greener pastures and a championship pursuit in Boston?
There hasn’t exactly been any concrete evidence that it’s going to happen, but Ant-Man has been in the NBA for six seasons and is now squarely entering his prime at age 25. The Wolves have come close with a pair of Western Conference Finals appearances, but they haven’t really sniffed a title.
Edwards could easily be one of the next NBA superstars to be traded
The way the league goes these days, like it or not, the T-Wolves are on the clock. They’ve made an all-in push this summer by trading for LaMelo Ball, but if things don’t work out with Ball and an aging Rudy Gobert, the whispers are going to get awfully loud about Edwards being the next superstar to change teams.
And if, and when, that does eventually happen, the Celtics are poised and ready to strike, yet again. Edwards would be joining another superstar and his Team USA teammate, Jayson Tatum, in a big market, for a glamour franchise with a history of winning. Plus, the Celtics are now primed to trade for a star after resetting the deck with the Jaylen Brown trade that brought in juicy, tradeable draft picks.
Not to mention, Edwards has a few recent former teammates who have made their way to Boston and might be able to help put in a good word in Mike Conley and Luka Garza.
Ant named Boston as one of his favorite places to play
In recent days, Ant fanned the flames a bit on his YouTube channel when talking about his favorite places to play.
"Well, of course, home or Madison Square. Madison Square, TD Garden, New York, Boston, Philly, and Atlanta at home. But it's hard to play in Madison Square Garden too. Great place. It's hard to play there. You've got to be ready for that. Boston is the same way New York is."
Now, this isn’t exactly Edwards demanding a trade or begging to play for the Celtics, or anything like that. But it’s not nothing. It shows that he acknowledges the crowd and the history in Boston, and playing the Garden is something he relishes.
Well, Mr. Edwards, imagine doing that 41 times a season, then many more times in the playoffs! Given everything the Celtics already have to offer in a basketball sense for Edwards, throwing in the advantage of being an iconic franchise, having a fanbase he clearly respects, and an arena he loves playing in, things are certainly starting to stack up in Boston’s favor.
I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon, but big moves come out of nowhere in the NBA. It’s only a matter of time until the next big star is on the move, and Ant is going to be one of the prime suspects to watch in the coming years. And should that day finally come, the Celtics have as good a chance to land him as anyone.
