6 Head coaches who could replace Joe Mazzulla if Celtics fire him
By Tyler Watts
4. Charles Lee
Lee played college basketball at Bucknell and spent four years as a professional overseas before heading into coaching. He worked as an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks before joining the Celtics this summer.
Lee won a championship with Milwaukee in 2021 and was their associate head coach last season as they finished with the best regular season record in the NBA. The 38-year-old has interviewed for several head coaching vacancies in recent years but has been unable to land a gig.
Lee is known for his positivity (subscription required) and player development. He is credited with helping Khris Middleton become an All-Star, and Lee hopes to have a strong connection with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in Beantown.
Charles Lee is Joe Mazzulla’s top assistant this season and would be next in line to take over if the current Boston Celtics head coach is let go. Lee would be the interim as the front office searches for a replacement. There are options with championship experience available, but first-time head coaches can have success. Does Boston go for a first-timer or a veteran? It is not an easy decision, but their all-in approach could lead to favoring someone who has already done it.
