The ink has not yet dried on a $304 million Supermax contract from the Boston Celtics for Jaylen Brown, but CelticsBlog’s Ben Dupont is already floating out when trade rumors involving No. 7 — which is when decisions must be made on contract extensions for Derrick White and Malcolm Brogdon.

“If the cap increase is less than (8% annually), his salary can’t increase with a trade,” Dupont prefaced before saying, “If he is traded in a year with a big cap increase, though, then he could see a pay increase of a million or so each year post-trade. That boost would be sustained throughout the life of the contract. And just that kind of year could be looming. A new TV deal expected in the next few years is expected to lead to a major salary cap boost in the 2025-26 offseason. That happens to be the season that Jayson Tatum’s extension likely will kick in and cause serious salary complications for Boston. If Brad Stevens elects to move Brown, it could very well happen during that offseason.”

To be fair to Dupont, that talking point is one of interest due to the curious inclusion of a trade kicker to Brown’s Supermax; one that seemingly would indicate Brown and Boston aren’t actively seeking a trade due to the added difficulty that a trade kicker adds to any potential deal.

Jaylen Brown trade rumors must be put to rest by, at least, Boston Celtics

No one is directly in the Houdini’s crosshairs here, but in general, Boston Celtics fans need to stop including Brown in mock trades and should space the word “trade” at least two sentences apart from his name. For a long time, the idea of a Brown trade made a lot more sense than it does now. During the summer of 2022 for Kevin Durant is one thing but in the wake of signing the richest contract in NBA history? Not so much.

The rest of the league won’t relent when it comes to Brown trade rumors. California-based teams will want him back in the state he went to college. Atlanta Hawks fans will want the Marrietta product back home. We know these things.

But there’s no need to add to it. Put it to bed. Brown is here to stay in Boston. Until any unrest is detected, embrace that fact.
