Boston Celtics’ Derrick White goes viral after crazy highlight surfaces: Watch
By Sam LaFrance
Derrick White gained the affection of many Boston Celtics fans, during the second half of the 2022-23 season. He had several memorable performances, winning the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award in February, and even sinking one of the more memorable shots in recent playoff history to force a Game 7 (pain) against the Miami Heat.
White once again turned heads this week, when a clip of him playing in a Pro-Am game in the 303 League surfaced. In the highlight, Boston’s No. 9 drives the lane and puts an opposing player (who probably works a day job) on a poster.
The clip got over 1.7 million views on Twitter, giving the basketball world to see White balling out with his new bald look.
Joe Mazzulla names Derrick White starting point guard for the Boston Celtics
White’s impressive second half in 2022-23 did enough to earn him the starting point guard spot, following the departure of longtime Celtic Marcus Smart. Head Coach Joe Mazzulla officially named White the new starter, when speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
“Derrick will be our starting point guard. He’ll be one of our starting guards,” Mazzulla explained, per CLNS Media. “Like I said, we have the ability to play different ways. We have the ability to play small, we have the ability to play big. So with some of the changes that way made, it opens up a lot of opportunities for Derrick, Payton [Pritchard], and Malcolm [Brogdon]. I think that’s really important that those three feel like we’ve got an opportunity to grow them, we have an opportunity to help them on both ends of the floor. Those three guys at the guard spot are a part of our identity and a part of where we need to get to on offense and defense.”
White was named to the NBA’s All-Defensive second-team last season, after appearing in all 82 games for the Celtics.
