Where does Jaylen Brown’s contract rank in Boston Celtics history?
By Kelvin Mejia
The Boston Celtics and Jaylen Brown have agreed on a new contract extension. Brown agreed to a five-year, $304 million super-max extension.
It was a historic payday for the Cs and No. 7, but just how historic was it? Let’s look at the top five highest-paid deals the Celtics have ever doled out — and in the process, figure out the extent of just how handsomely paid Brown was.
No. 5 Boston Celtics contract: Paul Pierce, six years, $79 million
At number five on the list is Celtics legend and basketball Hall of Famer Paul Pierce.
In the summer of 2001, Pierce signed a six-year $79 million extension with the team. It is shocking to see Pierce on the list as he was a part of an era where the contracts aren’t the same. Pierce spent the last 15 years on the team and won an NBA ring in 2008, while he was also named the NBA Finals MVP.

No. 4 Boston Celtics contract: Al Horford, four years, $113 Million
For a while, the Celtics weren’t able to make a splash in free agency, until the summer of 2016 when Al Horford inked a four-year deal with the Celtics.
Horford quickly became a fan favorite, and he became a mentor to the young guys in the locker room. In 2021, The Thunder traded Horford back to the Celtics, and last year the Celtics agreed on a two-year extension.

No. 3 Boston Celtics contract: Gordon Hayward, four years, $128 Million
In the summer of 2017, Gordon Hayward signed a four-year, $128 million deal with the Boston Celtics. Tragically in his first game with the Celtics Hayward fractured his tibia and dislocated his left ankle.
Hayward was never the same since, and after his third year with the Celtics, he was traded away to the Hornets. Even though Hayward had a short season with the Celtics, he still ranks number three on the list.
Career Earnings: $91,599,092
No. 2 Boston Celtics contract: Jayson Tatum, five years, $163 million
In 2020, Tatum agreed to a five-year extension. Tatum now has two-year left on his deal, and he is also eligible for the supermax.
Tatum’s next contract will make him No. 1 on this list.
Career Earnings: $88,039,225
No. 1 Boston Celtics contract: Jaylen Brown, five years, $304 million
In 2017, with the third pick in the NBA draft the Celtics selected Brown. This year Brown made the All-NBA second team which made him eligible for the Supermax.
Brown has only been on the Celtics for seven years, and he is now number one on the list.
