The Boston Celtics were forced into signing Jaylen Brown to a five-year $304 million contract. Both sides were hesitant to reach an agreement, which is the reason why it took so long. The Celtics are the real losers because they are now overpaying one of their homegrown talents.

The Brown contract ultimately highlights that the NBA contract rules regarding the Supermax are broken and need to be fixed.

I am not trying to dump on Brown because he is an All-Star player, but the fact of the matter is that he is not a Supermax player. Brown deserves a max contract, but nothing more. The only reason why Brown was eligible for the Supermax extension was because he made an All-NBA team.

This stipulation in the supermax rule is the mistake the NBA made because it rewards too many players. I think the NBA should have made it so that you have to make All-NBA first team to get a Supermax because Supermax contracts should be for the top five-seven players in the league.

The Boston Celtics were screwed by the CBA’s Supermax stipulations

When you look at it from the perspective of the Celtics, they were screwed over. The Cs did everything right with Brown as they drafted him with a high pick, developed him, and now they are forced to overpay for him. What makes it worse is that they had no choice.

The Boston Celtics had to pay him or he would have left, and the Celtics would not have gotten a great return.

Brown being the highest-paid player in the NBA should be a wake-up call that the league needs to fix this rule. Brown getting the Supermax is only the beginning, as other non-worthy players will start to make absurd contracts.

It will be interesting to see the reaction across the league to the Brown extension from each front office’s perspective.
