The Boston Celtics were quiet on the opening night of free agency. They signed Oshae Brissett to a two-year deal and worked out an extension with Kristaps Porzingis that keep in Beantown for at least three seasons. It was a start, but the Celtics still have much to accomplish this summer.

Fans are watching the restricted free agency of forward Grant Williams closely. The Celtics have luxury tax concerns, especially if they reach a contract extension with Jaylen Brown. Can they afford to re-sign Williams? The offers matter, but it won’t be an easy decision either way it goes.

The Celtics were quiet, but plenty of other franchises were spending. Boston still has three open roster spots and the desire to be a title contender. Can they stay near the top? It depends on what they do in free agency.

Boston Celtics free agent target that got away: 2. Yuta Watanabe

The 6’9 sharpshooter was a rumored target of the Celtics, but he decided to reunite with Kevin Durant on the Phoenix Suns. Watanabe averaged a career-high 16.0 minutes per game last season as he shot 44.4 percent from 3-point range. There were several suitors for the marksman, including Boston, but going to Phoenix was an easy decision.

The Suns lack depth and are looking to round out their roster behind Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. Yuta Watanabe could be in for a career-high in minutes, and Phoenix should be in contention. What more can the 28-year-old role player ask for in free agency?

The Boston Celtics missed out on two wing targets on June 30, but there is still plenty of talent available on the open market.
