NBA free agency is always a major event. Even though the Boston Celtics won’t have much room to work this summer, they’ll perhaps have the opportunity to reunite with one of their former players.

According to Heavy Sports‘ Sean Deveney, Javonte Green “would welcome” a reunion with the Cs this summer.

“Green, a close friend of Celtics star Jayson Tatum, ‘would welcome,’ a return to the Celtics, a source said.,” Deveney wrote.

The 29-year-old high flyer appeared in 73 total games for the Celtics from 2019-2021. He averaged 3.7 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.6 steals per game while shooting 51.8% from the field and 29.1% from beyond the arc.

Green was eventually traded away to the Chicago Bulls — along with Daniel Theis in 2021 — in exchange for Luke Kornet and Moritz Wagner.

The move was ultimately done in an effort for the Celtics to get under the luxury tax and avoid paying the repeater tax that season.

Should the Boston Celtics be interested in a Javonte Green reunion?

Yeah, I’d say so.

Since being dealt to the Windy City, Green has put up solid numbers in a bench role for the Bulls. In the 2021-22 season, he averaged a career-high 7.2 points per game and shot 54.2% from the field and 35.6% from beyond the arc.

This past season he underwent a procedure on his right knee but returned to the court for five games late in the year. Despite the injury, Green once again elevated his 3-point percentage, knocking down 37.1% of his shots from long range. His increasing 3-point efficiency, combined with his and Tatum’s friendship, gives the Cs good reason to bring him back this summer.

One of the team’s most glaring needs is more depth at the wing spot, which Green could provide easily. Plus, he’d come in already having some built-in chemistry with some of the team’s core members.

A reunion with Boston is a realistic possibility, considering that Green likely won’t garner a massive payday in free agency.
