Should the Boston Celtics trade star forward for Darius Garland?
Reports have circulated that the Cleveland Cavaliers could be looking to trade star guard Darius Garland. The Boston Celtics could easily trade for the star guard, and they could potentially save money in doing so. With the new CBA rules, the Celtics could benefit from a Garland trade.
Ultimately it begs the question: should the Boston Celtics trade Jaylen Brown for Garland?
The pros of trading for Garland include that he is three years younger than Brown and he makes almost $100 million less(this is assuming Brown accepts the supermax offer). The fact that Garland makes a significant amount of money less than Brown would be key with the new CBA rules that want to prevent multiple supermax contracts. Trading Brown for Garland would allow the C’s to fill out other parts of the roster and help them financially long term.
Also, some Celtics fans see Garland as a potential better fit with Jayson Tatum than Brown. I don’t like the idea of having Garland with Tatum because I don’t view him as a top-20 player in the NBA. I would only want to trade Brown for another top-20 player in the league because trading him for a lower-caliber player is just not smart. I also don’t like the idea of having Garland running the offense because I think Tatum has taken the next step as a point forward. Tatum has reached a new level where I want the ball in his hands the majority of the time.
The Boston Celtics should pass on a Darius Garland trade
Although trading for Garland would save the Boston Celtics financially, I would not consider this move if I were the Celtics. If Garland’s teammate Donovan Mitchell became available, I would feel differently because he is significantly better than Garland. The Cs are much better off riding it out with the Jays.
Ultimately, it will be interesting to see if reports come out about the Celtics’ interest in Garland.
