After trading Marcus Smart and the uncertainty with Malcolm Brogdon and Payton Pritchard, the Boston Celtics could use another guard. Jevon Carter recently declined his player option with the Milwaukee Bucks, making him a free agent. Carter is a tough-minded player that would add tremendous value to a contender.

The Boston Celtics should target Carter this offseason, as he could be a missing piece to the team’s pursuit of Banner 18.

Carter has been in the NBA for seven seasons, and he has played in different roles. He was a role player on the Phoenix Suns in 2021 when they went to the NBA Finals, so he has experience in deep playoff runs. Carter also started 39 games for the Bucks this season. Carter’s versatility would be useful to the Celtics with the lack of depth currently at the guard

The important skills that Carter would bring to the Cs include strong defense and good three-point shooting. Carter has shot over 40% from beyond the arc in each of the last two seasons. Although Carter is an undersized guard similar to Pritchard, Carter is a much better defender, and he brings tremendous toughness.

Carter’s toughness is the number one reason why he should be a target for the Cs this offseason. The Celtics could look to replace some of the toughness lost with the departure of Smart by bringing in Carter. Having toughness that you can bring off the bench is crucial in playoff series and runs. Carter would also be a perfect compliment to Tatum and Brown.

The Boston Celtics can well afford to pay for Jevon Carter

The Celtics can easily make the money work with Carter, as he is a low-cost player. Carter is a low-cost player that will be an underrated signing at the time, but turn out to be a home run signing if he helps win Banner 18.

As free agency approaches, the Celtics should 100% make a run at Carter.
