Free Agent No. 1: Kyrie Irving, Point Guard

This is the wild option. Kyrie Irving obviously had a tumultuous time in Boston, with some impressive highs and disappointing lows, including a broken promise to stick around in free agency. Anyone expecting a reunion to be all sunshine and roses is kidding themselves.

Even so, the reality is that Irving offers a lot of what this group needs. He’s an elite on-ball creator, has one of the best handles in the league, and his combination of shooting and finishing makes him one of the most special offensive players in the league. Obviously, there are concerns about his temperament and decision-making off the court, but it’s an intriguing idea to picture Irving on this team.

If Kyrie lets the Mavericks know he plans to leave, and offers a Celtics sign-and-trade as an option, would Dallas be interested? It’s at least possible, and then players such as Derrick White, Robert Williams III and Malcolm Brogdon enter the discussion. Boston would also have to exercise some cap gymnastics to get under the first tax apron in order to add a player in a sign-and-trade. But it’s possible.

Does that make is wise? Absolutely not. Irving’s skillset may be a good fit, but this team needs leadership, culture-building and maturity. Irving tends to drop a grenade on each of those concepts wherever he goes. Whatever Boston needs, looking to Kyrie to provide it is a bad idea.
