Constructing a Boston Celtics dream team if they nailed every NBA Draft

2019 Boston Celtics Draft Picks

Actual Pick(s)

  • Romeo Langford (14th Overall Pick)
  • Matisse Thybulle (20th Overall Pick, Traded to 76ers)
  • Grant Williams (22nd Overall Pick)

Correct Pick(s)

  • Jordan Poole (14th Instead of 28th Overall Pick)
  • Keldon Johnson (20th Instead of 29th Overall Pick, Don’t Trade the Pick)
  • Nic Claxton (22nd Instead of 31st Overall Pick)

Besides Grant Williams, a solid role player who is currently a free agent, this draft as a whole was not great from the Celtics’ perspective. However, on the bright side, the draft class itself was weak, with the top two players being Ja Morant and Zion Williamson, both dealing with off-the-court issues in the present day.

The Celtics didn’t make good picks, but they also didn’t miss out on any star players. Jordan Poole, Keldon Johnson, and Nic Claxton are all good players with upside, but none of them are back-breaking to miss out on.

In this hypothetical scenario, trading the 20th pick was not the right move given how they made use of the trade (which I will go more into on the next slide). The 76ers made the wrong pick, but who knows who the Celtics would have wanted if they didn’t trade the pick.

Poole, Johnson, and Claxton would form a formidable head of the bench as fantastic role players. Poole and Johnson are both great on offense, but not so great on defense, while Claxton is great on defense, but not so great on offense. These three picks would be great from a team-building perspective, and relative to the draft class as a whole.
