The NBA Draft is one week away, and the hype around the draft is growing. Although the Boston Celtics have no shot at Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson, they can draft a potential impact player with the 35th pick.
This begs the question: what should the Cs be targeting in the draft?
The Celtics have two real needs that I would like them to address with their only pick. The first position that I would like to be addressed is a defensive-minded wing that has a decent jump shot. With the likely departure of Grant Williams in free agency, Boston should look to address his departure with the 35th pick. Finding a young impact wing would be excellent for the Celtics.
Two wings that I have my eye on for the Cs are Jaime Jaquez Jr. from UCLA and Leaky Black from North Carolina. Both players have tremendous experience, as Jaquez played four years and Black played five years. Jaquez is a more touted prospect than Black, and he was predicted to be drafted by the Celtics in The Ringer’s latest mock draft. The mock draft highlights that Jaquez could be a solid glue guy for the Boston Celtics.
Black is an underrated prospect that I am high on because he is an elite defender with room for growth on offense. With his athleticism and wingspan, Black can guard elite players, and he proved it this season. Black shut down projected number 2 overall pick Brandon Miller for 48 minutes in their matchup this season.
The Boston Celtics need to consider drafting Black because he could be a diamond in the rough player.
The Boston Celtics should target national champion big man
The other position of need for the Boston Celtics is a big man, as Robert Williams and Al Horford are becoming unreliable due to injuries and aging, respectively.
The Celtics could look to prioritize a big in this year’s draft, and Uconn’s Adama Sanogo would be my choice. Sanogo would give the Cs excellent rebounding and another defensive presence around the rim.
