Ranking star guards the Celtics could trade Jaylen Brown for this offseason
By Tyler Watts
1. Damian Lillard
If the Celtics have one weakness, it is at point guard. Boston has lacked ball-handling and playmaking chops in the biggest moments, and it hurt them after Jayson Tatum’s ankle injury in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat. If they decide to trade Jaylen Brown before he signs a supermax contract, the Celtics should be targeting a superstar point guard.
Damian Lillard is one of the NBA’s best shooters, scorers, and playmakers. He averaged 32.2 points, 7.3 assists, 4.8 rebounds, and 0.9 steals in 36.3 minutes per game last season. The seven-time All-Star is one of the best clutch performers in the league and was named to the NBA 75.
Lillard is 32 years old and is hungry to win a championship. He has zero interest in being part of a rebuild at this stage of his career, but Portland has missed the playoffs in back-to-back years. Could he finally leave the Trail Blazers this summer? He wants to be like Dirk Nowitzki, but Portland does not appear close to winning a title.
The Boston Celtics should entertain trading Jaylen Brown for Damian Lillard. Yes, the 6’2 point guard is older, but he remains elite. Tatum and Lillard could form one of the NBA’s best duos, and that could be enough to help Boston win their 18th championship.
The Celtics do not want to trade Jaylen Brown, but if they cannot agree on a contract extension this summer, expect the franchise to consider it. Stay tuned to see how it all shakes out.
