Colin Cowherd, the host of The Herd on Fox Sports 1, proposed a trade involving the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns on his show Thursday afternoon. Cowherd’s trade proposal involved the Celtics sending starting point guard Marcus Smart to the Suns for Chris Paul.

The proposal is a laughably bad one, and the Cs should not listen to Cowherd under any circumstance.

Smart has taken his fair share of criticism in recent seasons, but in 2023, he improved his overall game. The 2022-2023 season was arguably the best of Smart’s career, and even though his defense took a step back, he was still an important player. Smart also had a tremendous postseason for the Boston Celtics, as he averaged 14.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.2 rebounds per game. There were many games where Smart was a crucial part of the Celtics’ winning, like in Game 6 against the Philadelphia 76ers.

With Smart in the prime of his career and finally reaching his full potential as a player, it makes no sense for the Cs to trade him for Paul. Although I don’t think Smart is untouchable, trading him for Paul does not move the needle for the Celtics because Paul is not a winner. Paul has a history of losing and choking series leads in his career, with the most the big one being the NBA Finals in 2021.

Availability is also another reason why this trade is terrible because Paul is not a star player you can count on. Paul is 38 years and has a long history of injuries, which makes him a major risk. I would much rather have the Boston Celtics stick with Smart, who you know will be healthy for you in the biggest moments of the season.

Hopefully, the Celtics avoid Chris Paul and look to upgrade the other parts of the roster.
