1 bad, 1 great, and 1 fair Boston Celtics trade package for Jaylen Brown
By Seth Quinn
Boston Celtics’ just right trade package
While it’s unlikely this trade actually happens, it’s a good trade on paper for both the Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Celtics already have two good wings with Brown and Jayson Tatum but have a lot of combo guard-type players in Marcus Smart, Brogdon, and White. Trading for Darius Garland would give them a true point guard that they’ve lacked if that’s something Brad Stevens deems important.
The Cavs would consider this trade given they currently have two small guards as their backcourt in Garland and Donovan Mitchell. Trading Garland for Brown would give them more size and defense, without giving up too much on offense, and put the ball in the hands of Donovan Mitchell more, something he was used to doing with the Jazz.
From a value standpoint, this is an interesting comparison, as Brown was on the All-NBA second team last season, but Garland will be a cheaper and younger option. He’s worst defensively than Brown but is more well-rounded offensively with his ball-handling and playmaking.
This swap is more likely to be a foundation of a bigger trade, but it’s hard to figure out what that would be, so for now, the just right trade is a straight one-for-one swap. I don’t think either team actually wants to trade their young star players, but on paper, this trade makes a lot of sense.
It will be interesting to see if trade rumors ramp up surrounding these two players as the offseason heats up.
